Frequently Asked Questions

Whether you are new to ABA or looking for more information, the sections below explain what ABA therapy is, who it helps, and how services are delivered.

ABA therapy is a scientifically proven approach that focuses on improving behaviors and skills through positive reinforcement. It is widely recognized as a leading intervention for individuals with autism and other developmental disabilities due to its structured and individualized approach.

ABA is based on the understanding that behavior is learned and can be changed by modifying the environment and reinforcing positive actions. By breaking skills into small, manageable steps and using repetition and reinforcement, ABA helps individuals build independence and meaningful life skills.

ABA therapy is guided by evidence-based principles that support learning and behavior change, including:

  • Positive reinforcement to encourage desired behaviors
  • The Antecedent–Behavior–Consequence (ABC) model to understand and modify behavior
  • Prompting and fading to support learning while encouraging independence
  • Generalization to ensure skills transfer across environments and situations

ABA therapy is most commonly used for individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), but it can also benefit individuals with:

  • ADHD
  • Developmental delays
  • Intellectual disabilities
  • Behavioral challenges
  • Social and communication difficulties

ABA therapy can be effective for individuals of all ages, from young children to adolescents and adults, depending on their needs and goals.

ABA therapy focuses on building skills that support independence and daily functioning.

Targeted skill areas may include:

  • Communication skills, such as requesting, labeling, and expressive or receptive language
  • Social skills, including turn-taking, conversation skills, and understanding emotions
  • Daily living skills, such as dressing, hygiene, routines, and meal preparation
  • School readiness skills, including attention, following directions, and task completion
  • Coping and emotional regulation skills, such as managing frustration and transitions

Each treatment plan is individualized and based on the person’s strengths, challenges, and long-term goals.

ABA therapy also helps reduce behaviors that interfere with learning or daily life.

These may include:

  • Tantrums and aggression
  • Self-injurious behaviors
  • Noncompliance or difficulty following directions
  • Elopement or unsafe behaviors
  • Repetitive behaviors when they interfere with learning or safety

We take an individualized and collaborative approach, working closely with families to determine which behaviors should be addressed and the most appropriate strategies for doing so.
